Concessions Manager
For Independence Township Department of Parks, Recreation and
Seniors
Job Posting
The Concession Manager will be under the supervision of Full-Time
park staff, to manage operations of the Independence Township Parks
and Recreation concessions stands and vending machines. The Concession
Manager will be expected to provide excellent customer service for
customers, sanitary conditions and an organized experience for staff.
The individual must have (at minimum) a High School diploma,
experience in food prep, sanitation and hygiene, cash handling
experience, and experience in supervising and managing staff, as well
as the ability to use computer software, such as MS excel. Must be
Serve-Safe certified or obtain certification within 60 days. This
position requires stooping, lifting (up to 50 lbs), substantial
standing and walking.

Therapeutic Recreation Program
Supervisor, $10
Job Expectations
Reports to: Recreation Supervisor Positions Reporting to this
Position: None
Purpose
To plan, organize and execute Therapeutic Recreation (TR) events.
Estimated hours are ten per month but should be flexible. Must be
available to work the first Friday of every month from 5:00 PM - 9:00
PM. The individual in this capacity has specific duties relative to
their job, in addition to, the general rules, policies, procedures,
and expectations of the Department. Although every detail of the
day-to-day job may not be included in this job description, this
position will be expected to perform the duties required to help
administer successful TR programs that provides a positive experience
for the participants. Keep in mind; enthusiasm and communication are
key!
Responsibilities
- Assist in program creation, including:
- Researching new programs to be added to TR offerings
- Creation of program descriptions to be used in advertising
- Gathering and purchasing of supplies
- Program promotion via email, phone calls, etc.
- Reviewing program evaluations
- Lead program with no on-site supervision.
- Be at the site 20 minutes before program starts.
- Be prepared for sessions by having timelines and program
agendas created (just for their use, not for participants).
- Write up program evaluations.
- Be enthusiastic and active with the participants, their
parents and caregivers.
- Treat everyone equally and be respectful to the participants.
- Complete facility inspection forms before/after events.
- Know emergency procedures for inclement weather, injuries,
etc.
- Complete incident reports as needed.
- Wear staff shirt at all times during work.
Training
- Attend training meeting(s) and any other meetings that require
you to be there.
Communication
- The TR Program Supervisor is the link of communication from
the site to the office. S/he is responsible for informing the
Recreation Supervisor with relative information.
- Be visible and “active” on site. Be able to answer questions
and communicate with participants, their parents and caregivers
- Report any concerns about equipment, participants, site
condition, etc. to the Recreation Supervisor.
- Pay attention to supplies, including First Aid. Report any
shortages to the Recreation Supervisor.
- Communicate with the Recreation Supervisor on a weekly basis
(minimum) the week programs are taking place.
Experience
- Must have experience with planning program and events.
- Must have ability to work with children and adults with
special needs.
- Must be caring and compassionate.
- Must have excellent verbal communication skills.
- Must be outgoing and able to interact with public.

Recreation Internship Posting
Internship Length: May-August (traditionally) It is recommended
to do a sixteen (16) week internship, 600 hours.
Pay: This is not a paid position
Brief Description of Internship:
Interns will get hands on experience with special events and youth
athletics, including opportunities to work both in an office setting
and in the Park. Independence Twp Parks and Recreation has a number of
unique facilities and programs. Ideally, Interns would start in the
spring and stay through the summer. All applications should be
extremely motivated and dedicated to providing quality programs. The
length of the internship and the start and end dates are negotiable.
Interns will be expected to work 5 days a week, some of which may be a
Saturday or Sunday. Daytime hours and some evening hours. Interns will
be required to work July 4th, but will have Memorial and Labor Day
off.
Qualifications/Skills Required:
Good Organization Skills; Strong Leadership Skills; Ability to work
with public; Critical Thinking Ability; Strong Problem Solving Skills;
Ability to Work Both Independently and Cooperatively; Follow Up
Abilities; Ability to work under pressure; Knowledge of sports
(baseball/softball, tennis, volleyball); Available to work some nights
or weekends.
What to Expect:
- You will get an orientation
- You will get your own work space
- You will be given a 12 week schedule, including programs
(special events, sports and programs for all ages and abilities)
you will be asked to work. The schedule will also include special
meetings you will need to attend. You will have some choice in the
programs you want to focus on, especially it if matches your
concentration area
- You will learn the basic operation of the Office and the
Parks, from the perspective of an entry level employee, as well as
from the Supervisor perspective
- You will be asked to develop, implement and evaluate one
project
- You will get experience in preparing and reporting a budget,
writing press releases, letters, memos
- You will be asked to participate in the Department’s marketing
plan
- You will be involved with Staff in-services
- You will be asked to attend Supervisor and other Program
Planning Meetings
- You will be working with four different programmers throughout
your experience, reporting to one Supervisor. Staff at ITPR are
exceptionally qualified professionals.
What to Expect during a summer internship:
As stated above, you will have some choice in the programs you want
to focus on, especially if it matches your concentration area. Here
are some of the experiences you’ll have if you intern with us during
the summer.
- Therapeutic Softball-Each summer, we have a TR Softball team
that plays in a traveling league (Northwest Oakland County).
Volunteer coaches lead each team, but staff members are needed to
facilitate.
Swim Lessons-We have a top notch program at one of
the cleanest lakes in Oakland county. You’ll be able to guest
teach a swim lesson.
- Youth Baseball-Our Department organizes one of the biggest,
sought-after leagues in the area. To start the season off, we have
Opening Day, just like the big leagues! You’ll be able to help
make this day run smooth. Hershey Track & Field-Hershey is a
National program and we host a joint local event with Waterford
Twp Parks and Recreation. You’ll be able to assist at the Local
Meet and encouraged to volunteer at the State Meet.
- July 4-You will get to experience what it is like to put on a
huge festival in our local park, where thousands of people flock
during the day. You’ll be able to choose an area to work in. You
will be able to work right along with that programmer. You will
walk away with great know-how.
- Tons of Trucks-This is a unique event that you’ll be able to
help recruit trucks for and help with the day of operations.
- Tent City-This is one unique camping event that you’ll be able
to take part in. You’ll be able to come up with the craft
activities, as well as the scavenger hunt.
NOTE: Some above activities are not offered this year, so
replacement events/programs will be added.
Community Garden Internship Posting
Internship Length: May-August (can be shorter or longer, depending
on program requirements), 20 hours per week. This is the first time we
are offering this type of internship program, so the successful
applicant would actually help shape the program.
Pay: This is not a paid position and the Department is willing to
accept multiple interns for this position (so tasks may be divided up
between multiple interns).
Brief Description of Internship:
Interns will get hands on experience with the Clarkston community
garden, including opportunities to work both in an office setting and
in the Garden. The Clarkston Community Garden is a grass roots effort
and in 2008, yielded almost 2,000 pounds of food. In 2009 & 2012, 1200
volunteer hours were logged and over 9,000 pounds of food donated to
local food banks, each year. We also had 34 share gardeners. In 2010,
we expanded to 80 share garden spots.
The candidate must quickly grasp what has been done in past summers
and look for opportunities to expand the garden experience. Some
expansion ideas are:
- provide workshops (by coordinating with Master Gardeners) to
educate community on organic gardening methods
- provide Boy Scout/Girl Scout Badge workshops for garden badges
- create sponsorship opportunities
Ideally, candidate would start in Spring play active role in the
opening of the garden (specific date yet to be determined).
A first priority of this position will be working with garden
volunteers. Establishing a good relationship with volunteer group will
be a vital part of this internship. The Intern would oversee all
garden scheduling (including planting, weeding, harvesting and other
maintenance). Throughout the summer, continue to work with already
established community partners and develop relationships with new
partners. Other tasks may include: take inventory of local invasive
plant species, establish & incorporate mini-invasive management plan,
develop environmentally friendly ways to keep wildlife away from the
garden, property maintenance, coordinate booth at community events
such as July 4th festivities, parades, Clarkston Farmers Markets, etc.
The Intern would also start the process of prepping the garden for
winter. The end date of the internship is flexible since the garden
will not close until October.
All applicants should be extremely motivated and dedicated to
providing quality community services. As stated, the length of the

expected to work approximately 20 hours a week, some of which may be a
Saturday or Sunday.

Cooperatively; Follow Up Abilities; Knowledge of gardening, preferably
organic; Basic Plant Knowledge a plus; Flexible schedule.

volunteer or staff member)
- You will get experience in preparing and reporting a budget,

Community Garden
- You will be asked to participate in the Garden’s Master Plan
- You will be involved with Staff in-services
- You will be working with Parks and Recreation Director,
Recreation Supervisor and Park Superintendents
- We will work together on developing a tentative work schedule
according to your availability
Marketing Internship
Internship Length: May-August (can be shorter or longer, depending
on program requirements), 40 hours per week. This is the first time we
are offering this type of internship program, so the successful
applicant would actually help shape the program.
Pay: This is not a paid position

Interns will get hands on experience promoting programs and
activities for the Department. With our unique programs and
facilities, throughout the summer, interns will have opportunities to
work both in an office setting and in our Parks. All applicants should
be extremely motivated and dedicated to providing quality programs.
With a marketing focus, the successful candidate will gain experience
in:
- developing flyers
- writing press releases
- working with program sponsors
- writing script
- working with the Public Access Cable
- creating commercials to be played on Public Access Cable
- maintaining facebook page
- creating a twitter account
- updating website
- creating a marketing plan
Ideally, Interns would start in the spring and stay through the
summer. The length of the internship and the start and end dates are
negotiable. Interns will be expected to work 5 days a week, some of
which may be a Saturday or Sunday. Daytime hours and some evening
hours. Interns will be required to work July 4th, but will have

About Independence Township:
Independence Township is located in the northwestern part of
Oakland County, 45 miles northwest of Detroit. We are a Charter
Township 36 square miles in size, except for that small portion taken
for the City of the Village of Clarkston. We are located at 6483
Waldon Center Dr. in Clarkston, MI. Although the Township has over
32,000 residents, we have tried to maintain it’s “small town” feel by
minimizing commercial developments, developing safety paths and
conserving park land.
Local attractions include:
- 45 minutes North of Detroit, 20 minutes South of Flint
- 12 minutes away from the Renaissance festival
(August-September)
- 10 minutes away from the Palace of Auburn Hills
- 8 minutes away from Great Lakes Crossing

Film/Edit Position Posting
Brief Description of Position: ITPR is in the process coordinating
a group of volunteers to tape & edit Parks and Recreation
programs/events. Edited footage would be aired on Clarkston Public
Access channels 10/20.
Candidates should:
- Have some technical skills to work a TV camera, microphone and
lights in studio or in the field.
- Have a keen eye for camera placement and the ability to
capture usable footage.
- Have a flexible schedule and availability to film on evenings
and weekends.
- Have some knowledge of editing equipment/software.
- Be able to create footage that reflects Independence Township
Parks and Recreation’s mission and tells a story to, entertains or
enlighten the viewers.
- Have good communication skills, including being able to
interact easily and naturally with children, teens, and adults.
- Be organized.
Some lifting may be required.

About Our Department:
The mission of Independence Township Parks and Recreation is to be
the leader in providing and maintaining safe, quality programs, park
facilities and services designed for all ages and abilities.
Our Department operates five facilities, including a Senior Center,
two beaches, several athletic fields and other passive recreation
opportunities. We have sixteen full time staff. With over a $2 million
dollar budget, we are also able to provide a variety of athletic
programs, day camps, swimming lessons, classes and programs for all
ages and abilities. Located in downtown Clarkston, we work closely
with other non-profit organizations such as the Clarkston Chamber of
Commerce, local service organizations and travel sport teams and our
surrounding community recreation departments (Brandon, Waterford and
Springfield). We have a very friendly and enjoyable working space. We
are team oriented and very dedicated to serving our community with
quality parks and programs.
