Board of Review

Board of Review Structure

The Board of Review consists of three persons appointed by the Township Board, Board of Review members serve two-year terms starting on January 1 of each odd-numbered year. Members of a Township Board of review must be voters of the township, at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and must have lived in the township for at least 30 days. They may not be an assessor's relative. There are no statutory requirements regarding skills, training or experience that members must meet. Board members should be citizens interested in the public good, to the goal of fair, just and equitable property tax administration.

Our 2011 Board of Review members are Henry Hogan, Susan Aulgur and Rick Henry. Mr. Hogan is a realtor with Max Broock, a lawyer and former state representative. Mrs. Aulgur is a realtor, developer and Independence Township commercial property owner. Mr. Henry is a State Licensed Real Estate Appraiser.

2011 March Board of Review

Notice of 2011 Assessment, Taxable Valuation and Property Classification (Assessment Change Notices) will be mailed out the end of February and will indicate the change in Assessed and Taxable Values from last year to this 2011 year. If you disagree with the value, you may schedule an appointment to appeal your Assessed Value at the March Board of Review. The Assessed Value represents 50% of market value. In addition, you may appeal a classification change if applicable and/or you may file an Application for Poverty Exemption by completing the application and supplying required income tax returns along with asset, income and expense information for consideration.

Appointments are necessary by calling the Assessing Department at 248 625-8114. The Board of Review will meet at the Independence Township Hall Board Room, 6483 Waldon Center Drive, Clarkston. Dates and times for appointments are on your Assessment Change Notice and as follows:

March 11, 14, 15 & 18 From 9:00 AM through 11:00 AM

March 10 & 16 From 1:00 PM through 4:00 PM

March 9 & 17 From 5:00 PM through 8:00 PM

A resident or nonresident may protest to the Board of Review by mail by submitting a completed and signed "Petition to Board of Review" (Form L-4035). This form is available at the State of Michigan website  and at the Township Assessing Department at the address indicated above. This form should be mailed to the Independence Township Assessing Department at PO Box 69, Clarkston, MI 48347. It must be received prior to the close of the March Board of Review and documentation supporting your opinion of value should be attached.
