Overview
Mission Statement
"We dedicate ourselves to providing fair and accurate
assessments, to educate the taxpaying public on the procedures, laws
and components that create those assessments, and to offer service
that honors the dignity of the public. We must always keep in mind
that a citizen should exit this experience feeling satisfied with the
service rendered."
The Assessor’s Office is responsible for the inventory
of all property within the Township, and the valuation of the taxable
parcels therein. Both real property (land and buildings), and
personal property (tangible) held by businesses are taxable.
The office operates under the requirements of what is
commonly referred to as the General Property Tax Law which was
originally P.A. 206 of 1893. Most statutes are located between
MCL 211.1 and MCL 211.157.
Assessors must be certified by the State Assessors
Board in Lansing. The State Assessors Board (SAB) certifies
individuals at Level 1, 2, 3, or 4 based on education, experience and
examination. Level 4 is the highest rating and the most difficult to
achieve. Municipalities are required to have an assessor whose
certification is at least equivalent to the SAB’s standard based on
total valuation and complexity of the unit of government.
Independence Township is required to have a Level 3 assessor.
Principal Residence Affidavits and Property Transfer
Affidavits are filed at the Assessor’s Office. Once received and
stamped by staff, a copy is made for the citizen’s files.
Much of the Township mapping is available through the
Assessor’s Office. The Geographic Information System (GIS)
developed by Oakland County with regard to Independence Township is
available at the Assessor’s Office. Custom maps can be produced
for a fee.
