In order to save a treasured tradition, the Clarkston Community
Church has offered to help save July fourth activities in the
Township by matching community donations for the event’s funding (up
to $10,000). "Coming into this community for the first time it is
very clear that the July 4th event at Clintonwood Park is viewed by
many in the community as part of what sets us apart,” says Ken
Elwert, Director of Parks and Recreation, “But we still need
people's action through their financial support to meet the
community challenge and make this happen. Help us make this a true
community event." Anyone can help the township reach its $10,000
goal, from churches, scout groups, school groups, service clubs,
businesses, and neighborhoods right down to families or everyday
individuals. To donate, send contributions to: Independence Township
Parks and Recreation, P. O. Box 69, Clarkston, MI 48347. Donation
forms can be printed off online at
www.itpr.org.

“The Community Challenge is that the Clarkston Community Church
would match dollar for dollar, up to $10,000 for July fourth events.
It has been the Churches goal to reach out in the community and this
is a great way for us to partner with Parks and Recreation and to
give back to the community,” says, Dan Whitening, associate pastor
of Clarkston Community Church. The church has also pledged 50-100
volunteers in addition to its financial assistance and is
challenging residents to come out and volunteer for a shift on the
day of the event. Funds raised will be earmarked for the Festival
and Fireworks on July 4th. If the fundraising goal is surpassed,
excess funds will either be put towards other Parks and Recreation
programs such as Deer Lake Beach or set aside for next year’s
Festival.
In December 2010, with shrinking budgets, the Independence Township
Board was unable to fund several special events for 2011, which
included events such as the holiday tree lighting “Holiday Lights
Night”, “Tons of Trucks” and the July 4th “Festival of Fun” at
Clintonwood Park.
