Basic Requirements for Water Installation

  1. All water service pipe shall be a minimum size of 1 inch continuous pipe with no joints.

  2. All water service pipe shall be of type K-copper or polyethylene plastic, or polybutylene plastic tubing or pipe.  (Plastic pipe shall bear the ASTM marking and number)

  3. All water service shall have a minimum working pressure of 200 psi.

  4. All water service piping, when entering the building, shall terminate within 5 feet inside the point of entry.

  5. Positioning:  All meters shall be set horizontally in dry, clean, sanitary places perfectly accessible, no less than twelve (12) inches from floor level or more than twenty-four (24) inches from floor level, with a minimum of six (6) inches from any wall, twelve (12) inches from top for reading purposes to immovable object, with a gate valve on both sides of the meter and within six (6) inches of the meter, and where a small leak or the spilling of water will do no damage.
    NOTE: METER MUST BE INSTALLED BEFORE  C of O  IS ISSUED THROUGH THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT.
    INSPECTION ON ALL WATER SERVICE LEADS IS MANDATORY.  NO EXCEPTIONS!  FAILURE TO CALL WILL RESULT IN EXPOSING THE WATER LEAD FOR INSPECTION.

  6. All water service pipes must be laid with a minimum of five (5) feet, of cover, six (6) feet is preferred.

  7. NO WATER SERVICE SHALL BE INSTALLED WHEN THE SERVICE PIPE IS IN LINE WITH A TREE, FIRE HYDRANT, CATCH BASIN, OR OTHER OBSTRUCTION.  IF THE WATER SERVICE PIPE IS TO BE A CONCRETE OR PAVEMENT AREA, A “D” BOX MUST BE INSTALLED.

  8. The water service may be placed in the same trench with the sewer line if approval is given by the Water and Sewer Department, and all of the following conditions are met:

    1. the bottom of the water service pipe at all points shall not be less than 18 inches above the top of the sewer line at it’s highest point.

    2. the water service pipe shall be placed on a solid shelf excavated at one side of the common trench.

IF THE ABOVE CONDITIONS CANNOT BE MET, THE WATER SERVICE AND SEWER LINE SHALL BE SEPARATED BY A MINIMUM OF 10 FEET OF UNEXCAVATED EARTH.
