Water Packet
Dear Private Well Owner,
This packet contains information from several resources to guide you
through the process of abandoning your old well, well contractor
information, a township permit application for a water service to be
installed, and general information about water quality. Below are some
Township programs with a brief explanation of how they impact you.
Cross Connection Program
Independence Township is committed to delivering the highest quality
water and is involved with several programs to ensure that the water is free
of contaminants. One such program is the Cross Connection Program.
At this time, its focus is on commercial customers. The objective is
to make sure that these customers have the proper backflow devices to
prevent any non-potable water or contaminated water from hot tubs, pools and
etc. to make sure that they have the proper backflow devices installed.
Remember, everyone must pull a plumbing permit for the installation of lawn
irrigation systems. It is for your own family's safety and health.
Wellhead Protection Program
Independence Township is also voluntarily participating in the Wellhead
Protection Program. The Wellhead Protection Area (WHPA) is the area of
the surface and subsurface that is expected to contribute ground water to
the Municipal supply wells typically in the next 10 years. If you live
in or near a Well Head Protection Area, the use of household hazardous
chemicals (like paints, solvents, gasoline, etc.) should be closely
monitored in order to eliminate the possibility of groundwater
contamination. You can help protect your water supply by using
household hazardous chemicals carefully.
Storm Water Permit Program
And lastly, the final program that Independence Township is deeply
involved in is referred to as the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination
System (NPDES) storm water permit program. This permit addresses the
quality of the storm water that drains from subdivisions, roads, parking
lots, etc. The focus is on how daily activities (like mowing and
fertilizing lawns, washing cars, maintaining septic systems, etc.) impact
the overall watershed area, the eco system around us, and ultimately the
water that we drink. The NPDES storm water permit is something that
every urbanized community must obtain. Stay tuned as Independence
Township will begin to sponsor interesting workshops and activities that
you, the homeowner, will be able to participate in to improve the quality of
the environment and life for yourself as well as everyone in our community.
Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to
contact the Department of Public Works for more information on any of the
above programs or related services.
