Water and
Sewer
The Water Department is updating to a new type of water meter that
does not require an outside reader. This meter has an electronic
transmitter, which sends the reading via radio waves to a hand-held
receiver. We are first installing this new system in homes that
currently do not have an outside reader and in homes where we are
experiencing trouble getting reads from the outside reader.
Eventually, every home on our system will have this new meter.
If you would like one installed in your home now, please call
248-625-8222 for an appointment. We can schedule a specific time
to the there, at your convenience.
It is illegal to use fire hydrants - Please call us at 248-625-8222 if
anyone is seen using a hydrant.
Notice! Irrigation System Owners
State and Federal Law mandates that you have a backflow device if you
have an irrigation system. This device is to be tested annually, with
the test results submitted to the DPW. For a list of approved testers,
call 248-625-8222. If your plumber is not on the list have him call
us. All new irrigation system installations require a plumbing permit
from the Building Department.
Sewer Backup Legislation
On January 2, 2002, Public Act 222 of 2001 came into effect.
This new state law provides procedures that need to be followed in the
event of a sewage overflow or backup on your property. If you
intend to file a claim for damages due to a sewage overflow or backup
on your property, you must provide the Township of Independence Clerk
Barb Pallotta with the following information, in writing, within 45
days of the date the sewer overflow or backup was discovered or should
have been discovered:
- Your name, address, and telephone number
- The address of the affected property
- The date any property damage was discovered or physical injury
occurred
- A brief description of the events and your claim
Failure to provide this information within 45 days of the date the
damage or physical injury was discovered or should have been
discovered will prevent you from being able to make a claim against
the Charter Township of Independence for economic damages.

Procedures for
Final Bills
Final Water Bills
We must receive advance notice of a closing, as we need to schedule an
appointment with the current homeowner to read the inside meter.
Please call our office at 248-625-8222 to schedule a final read.
If the seller will not be moving out of the home
immediately after the closing, it should be determined, in advance,
with the seller and purchaser as to the final date for the meter read.
We cannot get in the middle of who is responsible for
a final bill.
Final Sewer Bills
We need a 24-48 hour notice to prepare the final sewer bill for the
seller.
The final bill can be picked up at our office at 6050 Fleming's
Lake Rd., mailed to a forwarding address or faxed.
