The close of registration for the
General election on November 2, 2010 will be October 4, 2010.
The Township Clerk's office will be open from 8:00 AM -
5:00 PM.
Notice of Close of Registration
To register to vote in Michigan you must be:
- a U.S. citizen
- at least 18 years of age by election day
- a resident of Michigan and the city or township where you are
applying to register to vote.
Where
Your voter registration for all federal, state, and local
elections is maintained by the Independence Township Clerk's
Office. You may register to vote at the Clerk's Office, by mail, at
the Oakland County Clerk’s Office or by visiting any Secretary of
State branch office.
In addition, specified agencies providing services through the
Family Independence Agency, the Department of Community Health, and
the Department of Career Development offer voter registration
services to their clients. Military recruitment centers also provide
voter registration services.
When
State Election Law requires that you register at least 30 days
before the election.
Moving
Whenever you move to a new city or township, you must re-register
to vote. If you move within a city or township, you must update your
address. This can be handled through the Independence Township
Clerk's Office, at a Secretary of State branch office, or by mail.
Michigan voters must use the same residential address for voter
registration and driver's license purposes. Consequently, if you
submit a driver's license address change, it will be applied to your
voter registration. Similarly, if you submit a voter registration
address change, it will be applied to your driver's license.
Mail-in Forms: You can obtain a mail-in voter registration form (pdf
file) here:
http://www.michigan.gov/documents/voterreg-app_16084_7.pdf
Mail the completed form to the address indicated on the form.
If you register by mail, you must vote in person at your assigned
precinct the first time you vote, unless you are:
- disabled as defined by state law
- 60 years of age or older
- temporarily residing overseas.
If you are temporarily outside the U.S., you may use a Federal
Postcard Application (FPCA) form to register. The FPCA forms are
distributed through U.S. embassies and military bases. A Michigan
resident who moves and registers out of state may not re-register to
vote in Michigan until he or she reestablishes residency here.
You may also register at the same time you renew your driver's
license by mail. Eligible drivers receive a voter registration
application in the mail with their driver's license renewal
information.
Where Do We Vote?
The Township has 15 polling locations. Once you register to vote,
you will receive a voters I.D. card stating the exact location for
you. If you are currently registered and cannot locate your voters
I.D. card, call the Clerk's Office 248-625-5111, ext. 233.
Polling Locations Changes
During the last presidential election, it was found that certain
precincts were too crowded to operate effectively. The clerk’s
office has established new sites. There are now four new voting
locations. Voters in those precincts received a post card advising
them of their new locale.
Precinct 3 Formerly at Calvary Evangelical
Lutheran Church is now at St. Trinity Lutheran Church at 7925
Sashabaw
Precinct 9 Formerly at Clarkston Elementary
Church is now at Clarkston United Methodist Church at 6600 Waldon
Road
Precinct 10 Formerly located at the Township
Library has moved to the Clarkston Community Church at 6300
Clarkston Road
Precinct 14 Formerly at Pine Knob Elementary
is now located at Oakland Woods Baptist Church at 5628 Maybee Road.
Check your voter id to insure your proper voting location.

Voting By Absentee Ballot
On November 21, 2007, Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land sent a
memo to all County, City, and Township clerks regarding the Michigan
Appeals Court ruling on the mass mailing of absent voter ballot
application forms to voters.
memo, provided to you in Adobe Acrobat form.
Absent voter ballots are available for all elections. They provide
voters with a convenient method for casting a ballot when they are
unable to attend the polls on election day.
As a registered voter, you may obtain an absent voter ballot if
you are:
- age 60 years old or older
- unable to vote without assistance at the polls
- expecting to be out of town on election day
- in jail awaiting arraignment or trial
- unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons
- appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct
outside of your precinct of residence.
Your request for an absent voter ballot must be in writing and
can be submitted to the Independence Township Clerk's Office.
Your request must include one of the six statutory reasons stated
above and your signature. You may request an absent voter ballot
with a letter or post card, pick up a pre-printed
application form from the Clerk's Office, or download a copy by
clicking here. Requests for an absent
voter ballot must be submitted to the Clerk's Office no later than
2:00PM the Saturday before the election.
Once your request is received by the Clerk's Office, your
signature on the request will be checked against your voter
registration record before a ballot is issued.
After receiving your absent voter ballot, you have until 8:00PM
on election day to complete the ballot and return it. Your ballot
will not be counted unless your signature is on the return envelope
and matches your signature on file. If you received assistance
voting the ballot, then the signature of the person who helped you
must also be on the return envelope. Only you, a family member or
person residing in your household, a mail carrier, or election
official is authorized to deliver your signed absent voter ballot to
the Clerk's Office.
If an emergency, such as a sudden illness or family death
prevents you from reaching the polls on election day, you may
request an emergency absent voter ballot.
Requests for an emergency ballot must be submitted after the
deadline for regular absent voter ballots has passed but before
4:00PM the day prior to election day. The emergency
must have occurred at a time which made it impossible for you to
apply for a regular absent voter ballot. The Clerk's Office has more
information about emergency absent voter ballots.
November 2, 2010 General
Election
We are open for Absentee Ballot application on Saturday, October
30, 2010 at the Clerk's Office from 9:00AM - 2:00PM.
The last day for absentee balloting is Monday November 1, 2010 from
8:00AM to 4:00PM. Applications and Ballots are not allowed to
leave the clerk's office.
Become an Election Inspector
Independence Township is always looking for qualified residents to
help manage our voting precincts on Election Day.
The election inspector’s job is critical to ensuring a fair and
efficient elections process. He or she performs duties such as
issuing ballots, maintaining precinct records, ensuring that all
laws governing the operation of polling places are upheld, and
finalizing paperwork at the end of the evening to close out the
polls.
To be considered for an appointment as an election inspector, an
interested person must:
- Be a registered voter in Oakland County.
- Be at least 16 years old. The voter registration requirement
is waived for inspectors under 18.
- Submit an application to the Township Clerk's Office.
- Be willing to declare a political party preference so that a
balanced election board is ensured.
- Attend election-worker training.
A person is ineligible to serve as an election worker if:
- He or she is a candidate for any office in that election.
- He or she has an immediate family member who is a candidate
for any office in that election.
- He or she has ever been convicted of a felony or an election
crime.
State Law requires that appointments are made no later than 21
days prior to an election, so don’t wait until the last minute to
apply. Applicants should also be prepared to put in long hours on
Election Day. The workday begins before the polls open at 7:00 AM and
doesn’t end until the elections process is completed after the
8:00 PM closing.
Precinct inspectors are paid.
