Tax Bill/Payments

Payment Dates to Avoid Penalties

Summer taxes are due on July 1 and payable through September 14 without penalty or interest. Beginning September 15 through September 30, a 1% interest penalty will be added. Add an additional 1% interest for each calendar month thereafter on the unpaid tax balance.

Winter taxes are due on December 1 and payable through February 14 of the following year without penalty or interest. Beginning February 15, a 3% penalty will be added to summer and winter tax statements. Failure to receive a tax bill does not waive penalty or interest. Payment can be made by check or cash. Credit/debit cards are accepted through this website or over the phone at 888-357-8394 only.

Deferral of Summer Taxes

The law provides for a Principal Residence, whose gross household income for the preceding calendar year did not exceed $40,000 AND you must qualify for Deferment provided for in the General Property Tax Act under at least one of the following classifications:

  • 62 years of age or older
  • Paraplegic, hemiplegic, or quadriplegic
  • Eligible serviceperson, eligible veteran, eligible widow or widower
  • Blind person
  • Totally and permanently disabled

You can access the Application for Deferment of Summer Taxes and the 2013 Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit forms by clicking on the Forms tab above. They are also available in the Treasurer’s office. You may fill out these forms and return them to the Treasurer’s office by September 14. The Treasurer may also be able to assist you by working out a payment plan. The earlier you come in affords us the opportunity to come up with a better plan to suit your situation.

At Township Hall

Township Hall is located at 6483 Waldon Center Drive, one block west of Sashabaw off Waldon. You may come in person and pay your tax bill at the Township Hall during normal business hours, 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM or put in the drop box after hours. There is a drop box located to the left of the main entrance on the west side of the building. When paying taxes in person and a receipt is needed, please bring the complete tax statement. When paying at Township Hall, we can only accept cash or checks. Summer taxes should be paid separately from winter taxes with separate checks when being paid at the same time.

Taxes Paid by Mortgage Company

Taxpayers who escrow their taxes throughout the year with a mortgage company will receive a copy of their tax statement to keep for income tax purposes. If your mortgage company has recently changed, please ask them to send a request in writing to the Independence Township Treasurer requesting your tax statement.
